Styl znany pod nazwą disco, rozwinął się początkowo w Stanach Zjednoczonych pośród społeczności afroamerykańskich i hiszpańskich. Od połowy lat siedemdziesiątych muzyka disco stawała się coraz bardziej popularna. Disco stało się obecne w mediach a także w filmie.
